Back in the days when I use to listen to the chart countdown on FAB 208, pushing it to my ear as close as I could as the signal came in and out just as the record was playing. One of the non stop commercials that kept coming through nice and clear was the jingle for the gum.
It went something like.
Wrigley Spearmint gum, carry the big fresh flavour, wherever you go, whatever you do”
And ended “Wrigley Spearmint, Gum,Gum, Gum”
Now that jingle was so part of my teenage years, and if I remember rightly, the TV commercial had the jingle with people walking up and down a beach carrying a huge packet of the gum under their arms, and for some reason we never questioned that at all. I found on You-Tube a Russian version of the commercial, but it is not the same.
The gum of course has been around a long-time, starting in the US, and making it’s domination to all parts of the globe. Mr Wrigley use to sell soap, before selling gum in the 1890’s, and the UK was making his gum as far back as 1927.
For me the gum craze be it Orbit or many of the others just missed me totally. After a few seconds of chewing, the nice sugar or peppermint taste was gone, and you spent the next hour chewing on this mass for no apparent reason.
After you could take no more, you tried to pull it out using your fingers, and we all know what a pretty mess it made. We had then to move it from our fingers to where? The floor, the school desk or anywhere, as long as it was no longer on your person.
The results could be seen on every wooden school desk, and any tiled floor, and of course at the bottom of your school shoes.
Incidently, Freedent was invented in the 1970’s. No matter how they reinvented it, it just never worked for me.
