This was a fantastic product, and so well advertised too. It was a cone container, with great tasting ice cream inside, that as you licked away at the cream, you would moisten the cone, and nibble away at the two. Just pure greed.
So what stopped the cone from falling apart before you ate it, well it was all down to a 1959 discovery in Naples, when an ice cream manufacturer put a coating of sugar and oil with chocolate on the inside of the wafer. This acted as barrier, and kept the cone wafer dry, and the ice cream waiting for your tongue
The ice cream inside had many flavours in the lifetime of the product, but I think I remember Strawberry, Mint Chocolate and Lemon. It was a great idea to have an ice cream you could start at the top and end up at the bottom, without ice cream hitting the floor, because of lack of support.
Most of us remember the Venice punting commercials of the late 1970s,
“Just one Cornetto, give it to me, delicious ice-cream, of Italy, vanilla and choco dream,
Give me a Cornetto, from Wall’s ice cream.”
Now we all knew the tune and we all knew the words too, and it would be alive to this day in the playgrounds.
The guy on the commercial providing the song was Renato Pagliari, who was Renee in Renee and Renato , who had a number one in the early 1980s with “Save Your Love For Me”.
