Just remember when you were really young in the 1970’s, at the beginning of the 1970’s I really do not remember that many flavours, in fact I still remember the plain crisps from Golden Wonder that you purchased. You opened them up and searched for a little blue bag inside, that bag contained the salt. So you opened that bag and a put salt over the crisps. Incredible to think that is what we did isn’t it?
Golden Wonder were in fact named after the potato, and were in business way back in 1948 in Scotland.
As the years rolled by, the flavours were added automatically for your enjoyment. Flavours like.
Oxo, Cheese and Onion, Salt and Vinegar, Gammon , Pickled Onion and the Ringo range too. They did Pot Noodles, it was my dinner in the 1970’s when I was starting my jobs in retail.
We had Wotsits, Rock and Roller crisps and we had peanuts, and we had jingles like;
“Golden Wonder — they’re Jungle Fresh… Golden Wonder — real Jungle Fresh…
When a fellow isn’t feeling very strong Give a nut a nut….
Look out ! People go wild…Golden Wonder — they’re Jungle Fresh…
Golden Wonder — real Jungle Fresh…”
And the peanuts would have Terry Scott swinging through the trees saying.
“Get jungle fresh,Golden Wonder!Get jungle fresh Peanuts! Get jungle fresh “
If you remember Golden Wonder were THE crisps for the first part of the 1970’s, before they arch rival Walkers came in and really did them damage.
Golden Wonder in its original form were amazing, I so remember being a Saturday boy in the early 1970’s, and on a Saturday afternoon my job was to try and keep the crisp display full. It was always running down in minutes, and if I recall correctly, this was prior to the multi packs. My job was to keep tipping the boxes into the dispenser, no need to worry about stock rotation in those days.
