The Golliwog

Awombleforever – The Golliwog a classic toy from the 70s,I made one at junior school and still have it.its a bit moth eaten now though. Can you imagine the children in schools today being allowed to mention Golliwog never mind make them. It’s a strange world we live in today

Rennie – It’s all gone PC mad Womble. They are very collectable now as they were banned.

Awombleforever – http://www.teddybears.com/golliwog/4gw3a.html found this on internet, quite interesting.

Rennie – Thanks for that Womble. I never knew it had such a history, I thought Robertsons invented him.
Another thing to look out for at the boot fairs.

Hattie – I sold a golly at one of my antique fayres, paid £2 for it ……..still had its label etc ……..got £45 ………Still have my two teddies when i was born looking a bit worse for wear now ……… but they r fine wouldnt part with them

Karen – i gave my childhood teddies to my neighbours daughter, they were down on their luck and had nothing……..it was so bad for them I distinctly remember her crying when the dog ate the only food she had for her daughter………heartbreaking times for them.

Lou Lou – There is a collectable toy shop in Gateshead metrocentre that has a whole window of golliwogs. I wanted to buy one but on close inspection was disappointed to see the eyes and mouth were stuck on felt and not sewn on. Cheap imitations of the real thing.

Hattie – When i went to hastings recently in old town they also had gollywogs they were older type was nice to see them were earlier than 70s though i thought but classic all the same xx hatts xx

Goldencup – Wasn’t there something on the news a couple of months ago about a shopkeeper who got in trouble with the Police for displaying a gollywog in the window?

Rennie – Oh for the love of god…………. that’s just so sad. Worlds gone PC balmy. Not even allowed to fly the England flag?????? Gone totally crazy if you ask me.

Karen – gee that and the Jam eh Rennie.

Lainybins – I have the Robertson’s Jam policeman golliwog badge pinned to the notice board in my kitchen. Remember the Enid Blyton book The Three Golliwogs? Golly, Woggy and Nigger, I think they were called ~ oh dear, oh dear. I shall have to dig it out now.

Awombleforever – Yes Lainybins ,think I do remember that book or something like it.
I used to be a bit scared of some of the ilustrations ,I think the golliwog was a bit scarey.

Karen Hi all – been of line for some time..but re Golly wogs, if they are not p.c. then the black and white minstrel shows are definately not p.c. These are just part of our childhood memories…and associations.

Awombleforever – Iv’e got an album Karen,when I find it I’ll post a pick.

James Blast – ‘awombleforever wrote: Iv’e got an album Karen, when I find it I’ll post a pick.’
I do hope it’s not an album by the B+W Minstrels! ”

Awombleforever – Yes ,what else would it be James I meant pic as in picture.
I probably bought it because I liked the cover or something ,not sure I have ever listened to it.
I did used to watch the shows though.

James Blast – ‘awombleforever wrote: I did used to watch the shows though.’
Dear Gawd! Have you no shame woman!!! ”

Awombleforever – No I havn’t

Johnny7and ChadValli – “Hi Wern’t they THE MIKE SAMS SINGERS or something?? They were on the radio as well on ‘SING SOMETHING SIMPLE’? (as cares go by) My Dad used to listen to it

James Blast – ‘JOHNNY7ANDCHADVALLI wrote: Hi Wern’t they THE MIKE SAMS SINGERS or something?? They were on the radio as well on ‘SING SOMETHING SIMPLE’? (as cares go by) My Dad used to listen to it
CHAD OUT’

probably still no reason to shout even if it is in blue if I come across as somewhat tetchy it’s just that we are getting hit by so many spammers it’s turning into a full-time job ”

Johnny7and ChadValli – Hi James, Meant as highlights thats all, and i wouldn’t have your job no-way no-how.The ads never seem to achieve anything. There must be a secure way to log on etc, password or code, sent a few days later perhaps to filter the bad eggs out. Keep up the sterling work but i will keep using the colours to brighten posts up a little CHAD”

Awombleforever – Hi Chad ,just don’t use the orange ,it’s hard to see and read.
Iv’e been doing this job for a long time now(getting rid of spammers)your right there must be an easier way. Mind you,I have tried to join another forum recently, only to maybe sell something I admit but they havn’t activated my account .This is their security messure but it’s no good if I can’t get on the forum. ”

Glittergal – Ive got a gollywog, a female knitted one and Ive still got her in one of our spare bedrooms, also Ive got again from the seventies Robertson Gollies collectables., an instrumental band, also in the same room, and recently I bought a couple of golly fridge magnets, I dont do PC, I think its aload of rubbish

I started building Escape in 2005 and in it’s early form I had the pleasure of a great 70s community. Sadly with Escape’s new design we couldn’t incorporate the old threads into the new forum but so we don’t lose all those magical old chats we’ve collected them all here for you to go back and read.
