70s Fragrances

Lindy – Can you remember the body sprays, perfumes, aftershaves you used in the seventies?
Every summer i used to buy couple of bottles of Yardleys Sea Jade it was a lovely summery spray, not available now

Rennie – Nice one Lindy,
Did any of you guys buy Denim?

Mark UK – I was too posh for Denim I used Aramis. Can you still get that now?

Lindy – Go on….. bet you both used ….BRUT……..

Karen – Brut….my oh my…..wasnt Blue Stratos out then?
I remember IF perfume and Babe perfume….oh the memories.

Lindy – Then that really powerful scent Tabu….you can still get that..

Hattie – Early on in the seventies so would have been bout 11 or 12 remember getting lots of avon as christmas presents, in all the fancy bottles, which are very collectable right now! Then went on to Musk, think that was how it was spelt loved it!

Rennie – How about Hai Karate? I remember the advert with the poor bloke getting karate chopped.

Karen – What about the advert for Old Spice – classic. SMitty was a big hit with the ladies of the 70’s, my mum loved and still wears Tabu – Hattie. Hai Karate (was that really how it was spelled?) was something dads got for chrimbo….

Lindy – and ..’our enery’ cooper splashing Brut all over in the ad …..

Rennie – What about Casablanca….. the smell that lingers. Not the best slogan methinks.

Awombleforever – Charlie, its still around now and 1 my husband liked but dont think its around anymore faberge west.Oh I nearly forgot my favorite patcholli oil, yummy on a male.

Karen – whenever I smell Yardley english blossom(think that’s correct name) I remember my grandparents……….aw. Smells are sooooo provocative…..mmm pipe tobacco

Rennie – I’m just trying to remember the pipe smokers adverts from the seventies.
You had the Hamlet cigar adverts avec the Bach music, with the golfer guy trying to get his ball out of the bunker with little success.
Any you guys remember?

Awombleforever – I vaguely remember the 1 with the carlos fandango wheels on an anglia?
when he drives through a gate or something and the wheels are too wide and they get torn off the car.I think it was Hamlet.

Goldencup – What about Gingham? Our entire (girls) school used to reek of it! Then Charlie took over I think. Just Musk was also popular.

Vee – i can remember using..Goya…phew what a stink and also i used to wear Brut 33..splash it all over…lol…..all the girls used to wear it….

Hattie – Hi Vee, yes do u know i remember putting on my dads brut i forgot that till u said it

Nix – We had Love’s Baby Soft. It looked pink. The ad campaign went something like, “”You can try hard, or you can try soft.”” I think that meant, “”Don’t be a big ol’ ho.
And there was a great one, aimed at a more adult woman, called Enjoli. It’s jingle, sung in a husky voice that got raspier and louder, was just God-awful. I think it was supposed to be a liberated, every-woman, you-can-do-anything premise, but it came off so…stupid:

“”I can bring home the bacon–
Fry it up in a pan (at which point she actually whipped out a frying pan)
And never, ever, let you forget you’re a man–’cause I’m a wooooman!
Enjoli!

No, I am not kidding.

LouLou – Every Xmas I bought my godmother Tweed.

Sladegirlie – Hey, how about, Tramp, Babe, Rebel, Cie, Kiku, Blase, Black Rose, and Laughter. They were all fab. My dad always seemed to have Old Spice and my mum used to love Coty L’aimant (is that spelt right?) Ahh, memories

Slayed – My Dad still wears Old Spice now!! He was 80 this year, bless him!!
My Mam wears Estee Lauder Beautiful now but she always wore L’Aimant by Coty in the 60s and 70s. Our parents sounded similar then sladegirlie!!

I used to wear Aqua Manda, Babe, Charlie, Laughter and Smitty and I used some bath stuff by Bronley – probably called Rhapsody that is no longer available – you could get shampoo and conditioner in it too!

Would still wear Aqua Manda in Summer if it was available now as I loved the fresh citrusy smell of it. Mustn’t forget Apple Blossom by Helena Rubenstein – it came in a glass bottle shaped like a squirrel. I wore that an awful lot in those days and still do on occasion, but it isn’t made by the same person now – a company called Kent’s make it now and I use it in bodyspray form!!

Musk made me physically ill back then as did the smell of Hartnell’s In Love that an aunt used to wear. I was so ill just before Christmas ’74 after she’d been at ours for a visit that my folks called the Doc for a home visit and it turned out I had Glandular Fever!!! I was ill all over that Christmas and New Year but I only had it mild and still joined the WRAF on 8th January 1975!!

I now wear Elizabeth Arden’s Red Door, EL’s Youth Dew or EL’s Cinnibar on a night out. I wear Apple Blossom bodyspray on a normal day and sometimes I wear Anais Anais, if I am meeting friends of to go shopping in town Luv Anita xxx

Awombleforever – Mine was charlie back then and chanel no 5.Chanel so expensive now so use Pleasures by EL. I also love patouli oil ,has to be on a denim jacket preferable worn by a sexy male

Imp – Rive Gauche, Gingham, Cinnibar and Opium then and Opium now can’t seem to find Cinnibar anymore maybe I’m looking in the wrong places.
For normal every day I wear the Impulse body sprays (don’t get any men chasing me though) mainly 02 or Thrill.

Sladegirlie – Hey Slayed, are you sure you are not my long lost sister?!
I remembering putting drops of “”In Love”” perfume in my dad’s sherry decanter. Boy was he cross
AquaManda was very lovely, and I think they did another one called AquaCitra.
At the moment I am wearing “Fifth Avenue”.
Denim for men………yum

Slayed – Hi Sladegirlie ROFL!! Wish I did have a sister – all I had was a pesky kid brother who was 3 as I hit my teens!! He was a right pain – he’s the reason I had my hair cropped dead short at 14 – he was absolutely fascinated with it being so long and used it to pull himself into upright positions whenever he fell over!! My scalp used to bleed with how hard he tugged on it!!

Can anyone remember the Silvikrin Hair Treatments we used to have or the Vitapoint moisture cream that you rubbed in on a regular basis(particularly anyone who had very long hair)? And does anyone remember those rubber/ sponge curlers?

My mam did a special Silvikrin Treatment on my hair once a month back then – it got left on overnight on a Saturday and washed out on Sunday (can’t get that treatment now). It helped the condition and shine of my hair back then. She started it when I was about 10 and was just beginning to grow my hair seriously. She used to rub Vitapoint cream into it every schoolnight and I’d sit there for 10 minutes after brushing it. She said it helped to preserve the condition of it (plus it stopped creepy crawlies as I never, ever had any)

I used to sleep with the hair in a ponytail and sponge curlers!!
It did help as it was never knotty next morning and my “”poker Straight”” hair did have ringlets for the first hour of everyday until the sheer weight of my hair made them drop out!
I’ve had short hair for years now but I still miss it being really long – it wouldn’t suit me being that long now though!
Patchouli oil and Denim – great combo and if the person wearing it was a SEXY MALE that was even better!!

Lainybins – I bought Hai Karate aftershave, talc and a soap on a rope from E-bay last year for husband’s birthday (as he’d just taken up karate ~ original gift, NOT!). Smells just as bad as I remember it but what did make us laugh was the instructions on the packaging as to how men could defend themselves against over-amorous females once they’d got a whiff of the stuff. Personally, I’d run a mile…. And no ~ t’other half hasn’t used ANY of it yet. *phew*

Rennie – *LAUGHING* Does anyone out there remember
*Casablanca* the smell that lingers………….?

Soulsister – Hi- We girls used to have several perfumes that we liked to wear, there was Charlie, smitty, Tramp, apple blossom, jovan musk[beautiful], and sea jade by Yardleys. we never wore the really expensive perfumes until we were working[Chanel no 5, Samsara, Poison etc] but i thought you couldnt beat the old cheap perfumes-cos they were dear enogh for us! We went through a stage where we used to buy little bottles of Brut and i still think of the old days if i smell that now. But there was one body spray that i loved to get from woolies, i think it was impulse-Sleepy lagoon. I loved that but i cant even remember what it smells like today. My mum used to wear tweed[which i thought was disgusting, and In Love by Hartnell, which was nice and came in a lovely heart shaped bottle, and l’aimant by Coty. I remember when i started work in 1978,in a shoe factory, and my friend came in one morning with a sweet little bottle of Chanel no 5, that her boyfriend had bought her, whilst showing it off, the bottle hit the floor, and smashed, and as the expensive perfume started to seep through the floorboards, we were all on our hands and knees, dabbing it up, and slapping it all over us,as quickly as we could!!! oh Happy days!

James Blast – all my friends were hippy drop outs, so it was patchouli, girls and boys

Awombleforever – Can I have a sniff

Glittergal – Let me see., from a very young age I always liked perfume it was always on my dressing table, some of the ones I remember to included Max Factor, it came weth a felt cat with green eyes, remember that anyone?? My Uncle Allan and Auntie Sally bought me it for Xmas 1974, also I had Aqua Manda, (vile), Just Musk, Fidji, Just Call Me Maxi, my first grown up perfume was Fidji, My Dad bought it for mein 1978 on the plane coming home from Majorca, and on my 16th birthday I was given my very first bottle of Chanel No 5, my ultimate favourite perfume

Soulsister – Hi- the people on this site never cease to amaze me!There is always someone who remembers stuff that i cant quite completely remember-yet again- I used to wonder what perfume it was that had a black, velvety feel cat[with a bit of marabou around its neck and sparkly eyes, holding a little bottle of perfume-now i know! There were a lot of perfumes i liked then, musk,[jovan],smitty,Tramp, in Love [Hrtnell], charlie[which i still love], sea jade[yardleys], and there was a little cone shaped bottle, dark red, with a gold top and i think it was called something like: White Fire?, and then the girls all started to wearperfume that came in little file type bottles, old fashioned war time scents, reissued California Poppy, evening in Paris! And older women tended to wear Tweed[yuk!], little girls Pretty Peach[Avon]. And us girls also used to wear Brut 45,[in the little bottles, with a chain around…..oh Happy Days!!!

Glittergal – Yes I liked that cat so much, I recently in the last year got another one from Ebay!!!

Glittergal – Someone mentioned Tabu, I first discovered this in Majorca, in 1979 when i was 16., loved it then still love it now, yes you can buy it today

Soulsister – Hi Glittagal!- Id love to get one of those cats again!- What did you put in the search for it to come up?

Glittergal – Cant remember the perfume I think was exuberance type in max factor black cat and im sure youll find it hun, good luck!xx

Glam-Rockett – I seem to remember a stage where girls were wearing Brute after shave . Does anyone else remember this?

Goldencup – Just dug up this old thread because a friend and I were saying exactly the same thing about Brut last night – all the girls at school used to wear it!
Also does anyone remember Gingham?

Lainybins – My older sister used to wear Brut because she wanted to smell like her boyfriend who used it as an aftershave. Ewwww! How pleased were we when they split up, eh?

I was once given a bottle of Charlie and felt sooooo grown up!”
Jack Regan “I can remember going to a school disco aged 11 and covering myself with my dads Hi Karate. I thought I was very cool.
Great topic

Lainybins – A couple of years ago I bought Hi Karate soap-on-a-rope, talc and aftershave off Ebay for Mr Bins because ~ um ~ he’d just taken up karate…. Happily he’s not taken any of the stuff out of the boxes so far!
