Siegel’s most extraordinary film – a slowly unfolding of the civil war period with Clint Eastwood as the wounded soldier cared for by the girls and staff of a young ladies’ seminary. It is studied and accumulative in it’s effect in contrast to Siegel’s usual speedy exposition, and displays one of the director’s heroes overstepping the mark ans succumbing to some peculiar horrors. Sadly the film was barely shown in this country but anyone with a taste for the macabre would be mad to miss it.
