Now here is a series that has to be one of the best comedy dramas ever to come out of the U.S.
It was must see viewing when it launched on BBC2 in 1972 before switching to BBC1 years and years later. I watched some episodes back a few years ago that had been cleaned up.
The visuals were stunning and perfect. The problem was that the laughter track was included. When transmitted by the BBC the laughter track was removed and made it more poignant. After all I do NOT need a clue when I am suppose to laugh.
The laughter track which is how it went out in the U.S. was so bad – it changed the whole programme into a farce. Horrible

Canned laughter I can not stand, Mash was a good series though, along with Cheers which was performed in front of a live audience now that was a good series, the UK version of Dear John with the late Ralph Bates I rate highly, the characters were just so funny.

Never got into Dear John- probably as I have had too many of those Dear John Letters
