A casualty of the energy crisis, Maserati went into liquidation but has been rescued by Alessandro de Tomaso with help from the Italian government. The mid-engined Merak uses an enlarged version of the four-camshaft V6 engine from the now defunct Citroen SM and it has power brakes. There is also a Merak SS with 220 b.h.p., air conditioning, electric windows, magnesium wheels and a top speed of 155 m.p.h.
