The 60s super group had a 1960s left over hit in the charts at the start of January 1970 called (Call Me) No.1. But surprisingly for my poor memory the group had a few more modest single hits in the 1970s. It was back in 1958 when the Essex based group formed. Then they were called Brian Poole and the Tremeloes and had thirteen UK Top Twenty hits. The one I remember the most was Silence Is Golden.
In 1970 they had a forgettable top forty hit called By The Way co-written by band members Alan Blakely who died in 1996 and Len “Chip” Hawkes The guys also wrote the next hit called Me And My Life which made No. 4 in the UK chart. Now this one I do remember.
Len is the proud dad of a son called Chesney who had a No. 1in the 1980s with The One And Only.
The last chart singles came in 1971 with both failing to get into the top twenty again written by both band members. First was Hello Buddy and the second was Blue Suede Tie. That was it really for this one time super group. None of the singles after this ever charted.
