The Seventies

I really don’t understand why it’s the 70s that always gets slated. Whether it be the music or clothes, furniture or hairstyles the 70s is always the era that gets derided and I would just like to set the record straight.

The 70s were fun, sorry that should read the 70s were FUN!.

Is that clear enough for you? Whilst the 60s were “heavy man” the 70s was totally groovy and it showed. People weren’t happy anymore sitting in their homes hiding under bland colours contemplating the meaning of life. No, the 70s were all about living it. The bands of the era never took them themselves seriously either I can remember seeing Wizzard on Top of the Pops where the guitarist was wearing cricket pads, angel wings and roller skates, a far cry from the musings of Bob Dylan.

Whether it was in the clothes you wore or by your moves on the dance-floor it was all about expressing yourself. It was all about being seen with bright, flamboyant colours and styles, big hair and groovy dance moves. You didn’t care what other people thought, if you liked it you wore it and you thought you were the coolest kid on the block whilst wearing it.

Now am I serious you ask? Well let’s look at the evidence.

How many 70s fancy dress parties have you been to, compared to other themed bashes? Why do so many people choose the 70s theme?

It’s because of the fun factor. When you start to get dressed in your flares and glitter tops how can you not smile. I know when I’m getting ready as soon as those flares go on I’m already in party mood.  When I look through the 70s costumes I always want to try the most outrageous ones on. I’ve been to quite a few of the 70s party weekends down at Butlins and got to know the staff quite well down there and they all agree that the 70s party weekends are the most fun and trouble free weekends they have.

And it’s not just for guys n gals of my age. The youngsters have all cottoned on too as the May weekend is full of Hen & Stag parties all out to have a great fun time.

So come on you era critics give the 70s a break, dull and dreary they certainly weren’t.

Loud, big, colourful and fun is what they were and if you still don’t believe me look at this last piece of evidence.

Name your top ten xmas songs and see how many of them are from the 70s.

I rest my case.

Growing Up In The 70s

I'm very lucky to have so many friends that love the 70s and some that have shared their memories with us. It's interesting to see there was little difference between the USA and UK but from reading these stories one thing does come through, technology. It seems to all the people lived through the 70s the technology of today seems to have taken the personal, community spirit out of life. It's taken us years to get this site together so we would love to hear your feedback in the Facebook comment box.
