I was in New York doing a string of sessions for Melody Maker, my friend Everett True asked if I wanted to extend the trip & spend a couple of days with him and Nirvana on their In Utero tour. I was game, I had a good relationship with the band which stretched back to before they exploded and anyway they were one of the best bands I’d ever seen. The Bethlehem venue was a big sports arena in the middle of nowhere. Early in the evening Kurt had lurked in the shadows of the auditorium watching Half Japanese, he asked some kid for a light – I’ll never forget the look on the kid’s face when he realised who was asking. This photograph is a straight live shot of Kurt, it’s the only photograph I’ve ever taken that I thought would work as a t-shirt. – Photographer Steven Gullick.
