The Disco 70′s

Believe it or not Disco had nothing to do with the way that you dressed, but it was a style of music. However, with the fashion world always evolving with its place in history, as disco music hit the scene, the fashion went with it as well. To understand the 1970’s dress in the disco era one would have to understand the music. With disco music there were influences in the smooth soul sound that so many people grooved to and the beat of funk music. During the 1970’s, disco music had a sound of electric guitars and pianos and …

Hairstyles in the 70′s

Was there ever a more mixed selection of hairstyles in any other decade? Ask five different people to describe a typical 1970′s Barnet, and you almost guarantee at least five different answers! Personally, I cringe to remember the shaggy perm I had around 1978 – well, after about three months it started looking shaggy; before then, it looked as if I’d thrust my fingers into the nearest electrical socket. Definitely NOT a good look . In the early ’70s, if Marc Bolan, with his black, curly locks, didn’t get your Dad tutting behind his ‘News of the World’, David Bowie …

70′s Fashion Trends

After a decade of the fashion world in the 60’s proving to society just how independent and socially progressive they could be here comes the 1970’s fashion. Just when the bold, flashy style of the mini-skirt and go-go boot had its first appearance in the 60’s, here comes the halter neck cat suit of the 1970’s period. With its undeniable influence of the urban Motown music scene the glamorous evening trousers and halter-tops were soon to take over. The style of dress on a typical evening in the 1970’s consisted of nothing but glam which was short for glamorous, a …

70′s Fashion Designers

The designers of the sexy retro 70’s clothes In order for someone to understand the fashion from the 70’s you would have to be introduced to the designers first. The 70’s were a time that was considered the “all about me” time. The 70’s clothes were controversial and rightfully so, it was the beginning of the “hot pants” and boots that were raised 4 inches from the ground. However, there were some that saw 70’s clothes as awesome and amazingly new with great taste and there were those who saw it as tacky and distasteful. The 70’s clothes had a …

70′s Disco Fashion

The Disco Era was definitely a time when those who thought they were bold and those who just knew they were beautiful hit the disco scene. While the disco dance 70’s clothes made their way into the fashion world, the “too hot to trot” people that wore them experimented with every colour imaginable. The era of drab boring colours and high-neck granny wearing clothes were now a thing of the past. A trademark of this disco dance 70’s clothes era was its colour and the peasant tops, not forgetting about that 4-inch high-heeled boot platforms that sent shockwaves from New …

70s Fancy Dress Parties

70s fancy dress parties have got to be the most fun parties in the world. I enjoy nothing more than seeing what costumes my mates have chosen and I must admit to being very quick in pointing out if the costumes they’ve chosen isn’t from the 70s for instance one year my friends came in army uniforms and so when I asked the connection to the 70s he smugly answered “M*A*S*H”! I must admit that when I first started throwing my 70s fancy dress parties, which was around the early 90s, there was very little to find in the fancy …

Make-Up in the 70′s

One of my illicit pleasures in the ’70s, while still only a schoolgirl, was stealing a peek in my Mum’s Cosmopolitan magazine. It was strictly forbidden of course, being ‘unsuitable’ for me, and kept hidden in Mum’s bedroom . Inside were pages of gloss and glamour, hints at risqué activities I could only guess about, the odd nude body, and arty shots of models with beautifully made-up faces. I remember seeing a feature on Zandra Rhodes, complete with green hair and amazing make up drawn onto her face -totally unique and now quite iconic. Glittery glam rock make-up of the …
