70s fancy dress parties have got to be the most fun parties in the world. I enjoy nothing more than seeing what costumes my mates have chosen and I must admit to being very quick in pointing out if the costumes they’ve chosen isn’t from the 70s for instance one year my friends came in army uniforms and so when I asked the connection to the 70s he smugly answered “M*A*S*H”!
I must admit that when I first started throwing my 70s fancy dress parties, which was around the early 90s, there was very little to find in the fancy dress shops aside from the obligatory Abba style glitter dresses and the odd home stitched flares. Thankfully the seventies and fancy dress in general has grown massively and the industry has flourished bringing a huge selection of 70s fancy dress outfits which grow every year.
Nowadays you have a choice of not only hundreds of costumes but also wigs, shoes, jewellery and even moustaches. You can be pretty much be whoever you want to be from the 70′s from Noddy Holder, Marc Bolan to the Village People. It’s also not only pop stars from the 70s either. Films and children’s TV characters are also catered for with Snoopy and Peanuts, Fozzie Bear and my favourite Muppet Animal. From the classic films you can be anyone from the Rocky Horror show or Grease or even a 70s porn star.
Aside from all these you have loads of hippie and disco costumes plus the Pimp outfits which I admit do look supercool. There are just so many 70s fancy dress costumes out there now that you can even match them up and go as a couple.
Yes the selection nowadays is really vast and the fancy dress manufacturers are bringing out more every month so each 70s party I throw there’s new outfits to see.
But there is now a new area that is growing pretty quickly and that’s vintage clothing. With the growing use of the internet and sites like Ebay people are finding fashions and styles they have never before seen and collecting original vintage clothes has become a big pastime for many people. It’s easy to see why, I’ve seen some beautiful vintage shirts on Ebay which I would never see in the local high street shops and with people looking more for individuality buying these vintage 70s clothes is a perfect way of showing people your uniqueness.
I have to hold my hand up to moving more down that road but it’s always nice when I go to the Butlins “We Love the 70’s” weekends I’m still the only one wearing an original Starsky cardigan.
Yes the 70s fancy dress parties are still the best as I never fail to get excited when I’m putting on my flairs listening to Marc Bolan’s T.Rex playing Hot Love so come on let’s get it on and go 70’s.
And remember, keep it cool, keep it groovy.
