British born Labi came into this world in 1945 and met his fellow gay life partner in 164 and they married in 2005. Labi had a cassette tape of his songs that found their way to DJ Dave Cash, and with his help Labi had his recording career started.
His first album in 1970 was simply called Labi Sifre, but his first single hit was in 1971 with the beautiful It Must Be Love reaching No. 14 in the UK charts, of course a huge hit again in the 1980s by the group Madness.
I never thought I’d miss you
Half as much as I do
And I never thought I’d feel this way
The way I feel
About you
As soon as I wake up
Every night, every day
I know that it’s you I need
To take the blues away
At this point his gayness was not widely known, and his next single in 1972 called Crying Laughing Loving Lying when heard now can give a slightly different interpretation of the lyrics. Surprisingly he had only one more modest hit in the 1970s called Watch Me. But in the 80s he came back strong.
