British born John Barry O.B.E. was born in 1933 and was best known for his fantastic film and TV themes. In his time he won several Grammy and BAFTA awards and a further TEN Golden Globe nominations. John Barry Prendergast was his real name. John was responsible for some of these 1960s classic themes.
Born Free, Goldfinger, From Russia With Love and Juke Box Jury. Juke Box Jury was a Saturday Night TV show on BBC1 where singles were played and the guests on the panel had to say if they thought this would be a HIT or a MISS. Sometimes it would lead to the singer of the song voted a MISS being in the background, and having to come onto the LIVE show just as he was told his single was rubbish.
In the 1970s he had a chart hit for the Bond film Diamonds are Forever sang by the powerful Welsh superstar Shirley Bassey and a smaller hit with The Man With The Golden Gun by Lulu. He also helped the late Dona Summer get a top ten hit in 1977 with the theme from the film The Deep.
TV was also a passion and he had a chart hit under his name along with his own orchestra for the theme to ATV show The Persuaders starring Roger Moore and the late Tony Curtis. The theme made the top twenty in 1972.
John Barry died in January 2011 from a heart attack aged 77. He was married four times, one of his wives was Jane Birskin who had the naughty 1960s hit Je t’aime.
