They have sold over 70 million albums and they date back to 1964, and had several classic hits in the 1960s including the beautiful Nights In White Satin which charted again in the 1970s. This classic song was written by Justin Hayward and came from the album Days Of Future Passed from 1967. The single got to No. 9 in the UK in 1972.
Justin was 19 when he wrote this song, which of course was about satin sheets and what can be done under those satin sheets. Justin was born in England in 1946 and is a holder of an Ivor Novello award.
The first hit of the 1970s was Question in 1970 coming from the album A Question Of Balance. The single was to be called the same, but it was shortened to just Question. The single was yet another song about the ongoing Vietnam War and John Lodge was the guitarist on the track, as he was on all the Moody Blues songs.
1972 saw the next UK hit called Isn’t Life Strange from the album Seventh Sojoum with Mike Pinder on backing vocals and Ray Thomas on flute. Graham Edge was on drums. The next single just hit the top forty in 1973 from the same album called I’m Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band).
That was the very last 1970s hit for the group, but the group had gold albums though the 60s and 70s in the UK and U.S.A and are still heard continuously on Gold stations throughout the world.
