Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon

In the 1960s the band had a big hit called Breakin’ Down The Walls Of Heartache, and then the group split. The group was then called Bandwagon, but it reappeared in 1969 as Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon. Johnny was a New York born musician. He was born in 1944 as Johnny Mathis, so had to change his name of course.

In 1970 they had two top twenty hits, the first being a Roger Greenaway and Roger Cook song called Sweet Inspiration which reached No. 10 in the UK charts. The bigger hit that year was Blame It On The Pony Express written by Tony Macaulay who in his writing career won an Ivor Novello award. His songs included That Same Old Feeling by Pickettywitch.

Several singles followed by none of them charted. Johnson became ill whilst touring and later died of cancer in 1979; he left us with two albums.
