Not a name that jumps off the page in relation to music from the 1970s but John managed 2 hits in the 70s. The first in 1971 was with He’s Gonna Step On You Again which was co-written by Christos Demetriou. John was born in 1945 in South Africa and toured Europe with bands called Floribunda Rose and Scrugg.
Johns first single He’s Gonna Step On You Again has the merit of one of the first records to make use of sampling, as it includes a tape of an African drum beat at the start. The song made No. 4 in the UK charts and was produced by Gus Dudgeon on Fly records.
His next hit was Tokoloshe Man. Incidentally Tokoloshe is a South African Zombie style creature and again he managed to reach the No. 4 spot.
Both tracks still sound good nice and loud in my car.
