Donnie “The chancellor of soul” was born in 1936 and died in 1989, and spent most of his early years as a backing singer in the 1950s and 1960s. Later he moved from the U.S. to live in the UK. One of his other 1970 claim to fame was that he was assumed to have produced the hit “Shame, Shame, Shame” by Shirley and Company in the 1970s, but a confusing court case on this went against him, so it was left unproven.
Donnie had three hits in the 1970s. Where Did Our Love Go, which was a cover of the 1964 hit by the Supremes. I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch) another cover, but this time by the Four Tops single. And Little Piece Of Leather from 1972 that was taken to be a great Northern Soul song and for most of us it is just not remembered.
