The highlights of his football career as a player include winning the European Cup three times (1971 – 3, with Ajax), the Ballon d’Or (European Player of the Year) thrice (1971, 1973 – 4), and leading the Netherlands to a runners-up medal in the 1974 FIFA World Cup. Growing up in the 70's you were forced to pick a football team very early on and schooldays were made up of ribbing your mates if your team beat theirs so you always picked the top teams and not necessarily the local team (Leyton Orient weren't noted for their first division presence) to avoid the abuse if your team lost.
