Seventies Man

I wonder if my comprehensive school was the only school at the time that did the following?
During the Wimbledon Championships a large colour TV was put on in the assembly area and had either BBC1 or BBC2 coverage of the tennis. It was on all day and the idea was that pupils could watch it during breaks and “free time”, although I remember most of the PE classes at the time were sitting down and watching matches with the so busy teachers.

Do you remember these great names from the 70s tennis scene?
Evonne Goolagong, Stan Smith, Arthur Ashe,Bjorn Borg, Virgina Wade

I never had such luxuries at my school but I can remember some of the stars, you missed Jimmy Connors and his magical words when being beaten by Arthur Ash someone in the audience shouted ” come on Jimmy” and he answered quite plaintively “I’m trying”

Also I forgot that the woman’s champion on the Queens Jubilee was Virginia Wade herself and she went on to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Jimmy Connors and John Macenroe were the best and most entertaining. In recent years it has been like watching robots play. Bring back humans.
