Car of the month: Peugeot 504 Estate October 1972
There is only one word to describe the interior space of the Peugeot 504 estate car: monstrous. With driver, front passenger and three adults relaxing on the rear bench, there’s as much room for luggage as you get in some smaller utilities with the seat folded down. And with only two people on board, the load floor is nearly 7 feet long. Yet this big car, despite its just under 2 litre engine, cruises all day at 90 mph and doesn’t feel at all elephantine on winding roads. The steering is light, if rather low
geared; the servo-assisted brakes are powerful; and the ride comfort and lack of road induced noise are in the limousine class.
This has always been a strong point with Peugeots, and it makes this big load-carrier an untiring car to drive on long journeys. The family estate version, with a third row of seats is the ideal vehicle for the man with four or flve children. Nothing like it is made in Britain, unfortunately.
Prices are from £1,859. circa Oct 1972
