BMWs long-awaited replacement for the highly successful 02’series is a good-looking two door saloon with increased space inside, a bigger boot, superb handling. and engines that operate on low-grade petrol. The new cars come in three sizes, 1,6; 1.8; and two-litres, but the middle capacity car will not be imported into Britain. The two litre models are available carburettor-equipped, or with fuel-injected engines (320 and 320i). The 1.6-litre (316) (illustrated) has manual gearbox but the larger-engined models have the choice of automatic.
Replacing the nine year-old two-door four-cylinder models, the 316, 318,320 and 320i have longer wheelbase. steel braced radial tyres, better brakes, stronger bodies, strut-type suspension all round, rack and pinion steering, better sound insulation, face-level fresh air. Engines give more power on lower grade fuel. The fuel tank is under the rear seat 320i with 125 b.h.p. engine has ventilated front discs.
