Austin Allegro 1750 HL
Price circa 1975 £2,095
Top model of the transverse engine/front-drive Allegro range is the HL (High-Line) which with twin carburettors, is an eager car. For 1976 the 1750 HL gets, full-length black plastic body sill-protectors to eliminate stone-chipping problems. The five-speed gearbox of this model gives the car leisurely motorway cruising characteristics, but a four-speed automatic with extensive over-ride control is an optional extra. All Allegros now have round steering wheels, the controversial ‘oval’ wheel of earlier models having been discontinued. Engine mountings are modified for 1976.
